I wrote a few weeks ago about the artists that fueled my interest in painting during the early days in college. The artists that called Berlin home, Eugen Schönebeck, Georg Baselitz, and Ranier Fetting were artists featured in a show called Berlin Art that traveled to NYC in the mid 80's, and today the works that played so importantly then, were hanging up at the Berlinische Galerie. It seems like time has past so quickly, the works looked so fresh still, so alive, I almost thought I could smell the paint on a Schönebeck work. So up for a bit here at Takt painting off the energy of seeing the very work that in so many ways sparked this entire curiosity of mine for painting and for some of the ideas that came from seeing the artists of this great city...

Bless the Deutschen for still believing that growling wagnarian metal is relevant, which I suppose can at times apply to being a painter in the 21st century. I may, perhaps, have more in common artistically with this music pumping in from below my residence here in Friedrichshain than I give credit...

Starting to settle in at Takt here in Berlin Germany for the next three months, studio is a lot lot smaller than my old Ballard location, colder, and at night, a metal music club is below my floor, so I'm in for a tour of flavors. Met one of the other artists today from Brazil Mariana Coan. We chatted about the arts, the world and the differences in being Brazilian and being American over hamburgers at a Havana influenced bar, right here in the heart of Fredrichshain. Received one of the packages I mailed to myself today with a exploded bottle of paint inside, made for a interesting morning. Cleaning a pint of paint off of the rest of the supplies took up most of my morning. Oddly it actually put a smile on my face...

I just received notice a few weeks ago that I was accepted at the Takt Artist Residency in Berlin. I will be working there from January through March of 2012. It's very exciting, my first residency and in a place that in many respects, sparked my interest in painting when I was starting to make artwork seriously in college. I was given the Berlin Art catalogue from the Museum of Modern Art's show from 1987. In it I witnessed the works of Beuys, Baselitz, and Bernd Zimmer, along with Arnulf Ranier, and american artist Jonathan Borofsky. I've always held it in my heart, this place that so many did so much wonderful work. I have visited the city before and really loved the time I had in the summer of 2003. Now I get my brief moment in the coming months to do a body of work that you will get to see unfold as I post from there.

sketchbook orangutans

I was recently asked to chaperone art students from the high school I graduated from in Federal Way for a day at the zoo. They were sketching for the day, so I brought along my sketchbook to do some work with them and see some sights. Near the end of the day I passed the orangutans area and was struck at how down the male and female pair in the window of their environment were. Folks were passing and patting the window, which didn't seem to make much impact on the orangutans. I took my turn and had a revelation that we aren't that far removed from where these orangutans are, and it hit me to share my sketchbook with them.
The following video was made by Ed Crossan who teaches at Thomas Jefferson. This moment was the highlight of the day for me and I plan on going back semi regularly to share forthcoming pages with the orangutans.

For the last two nights I've been working on site at the downtown Seattle Nordstrom doing some chalk drawings for the Men's Rail department. It's been fun to work in the store while it was open for a bit, then into the night after it closed. They have a theme in the department with motorcycle helmets, and amplifiers, so I was asked to do some chalk work that would fit and I jumped at the chance. Click the images to see them full.

I took a few days this last week to drive around the palouse and columbia valley of washington state gathering both still and video imagery for a project/collaboration with the seattle band The Western Haunts, and their song titled A Zealot Sun. I've been gathering video for sometime now to mix together, taking cues from the lyrics that Jake Witt wrote and explains here...
Hopefully this will come together in a way that is thematically close to how the song feels, and fits it visually. This will be my first video for a band, and actually my first video period. .Me in 1967.

I've been getting up earlier and have been having these odd memories of when I was a child. As I sip my coffee in the window of the living room, I recall how I saw things approaching, what I wanted, how it would be, and now at 46, how they currently are. There are no great insights, just reflections of odd things; what my home would look like, as I saw it when I was a child, where I would be geographically, the work I'd be doing, the social, the travel. It all seems to be flooding into my head, as if I've uncorked some hidden bookshelf that just re-discovered inside my brain.

I'm finding it funny to recall how I saw things as a child, or what I'd be doing or not doing, and all of and any of the number of things one probably projects in their youth towards their future self. To date, none of it matches, just as an FYI...

Target Practice

I've been focusing on arranging combine paintings[paintings that are composed of smaller paintings]. After painting over 30 individual panels and more coming, it can get a bit discombobulated here in the studio. I'm in the midst of building support/transport structures for the combines, so when shipping or transporting the work, no individual panel carries the weight of the whole. Things are flowing and there is demand for the work, which is something new in the last couple of years. Meditation and maintaining mindfulness has been important tools, and gardening of all things, give me lots of peace of mind of late.

When we are in the midst of chaos, let go of the need to control it. Be awash in it, experience it in that moment, try not to control the outcome but deal with the flow as it comes.

Riffing on a painting here in the studio, when I'm not doing yard work on the new home...

Sun is out, which makes it hard to get inside and make moves, but when I do, they feel good lately. I feel less like I'm editing, and stalling, and more like I'm moving to some odd music in my head. Although there is music playing here in the studio, it's more like I'm seeing a rhythm then acting on it.

I've still been thinking about Cy Twombly and about his passing yesterday, and again it seems hard to imagine him not here in the world making his wonderful and mysterious paintings and things...

Artist Cy Twombly passed away today in Rome. Not since the death of Joseph Beuys in 1986, have I felt so saddened. When I first started to awaken to art back in high school, and begun looking up artists in the library, Cy was one of the first to really shake me. I was feeling a revolution internally, rebelling as much as one could in a suburban neighborhood in Auburn Washington. I looked to music and art to be a guide for where I both wanted to go, and where I went. Twombly's work was musical to me, it had rhythm, poetry, revolution and curiosity all swirled into one. He led me down a path, painting wise, that has been rich and rewarding, and hard to explain at times. As art should can and should be every now and then. He was a constant taking off point, the lift to catch sail, to loosen one's grip, in order to get a better hold. I finished this painting above today, and then went to check on the news of the day. When I heard the news, it seemed only fitting to dedicate this work to him. I'll miss you Cy, and will cherish the work that you left behind...

This artwork is headed for St Louis, which holds a special place in my heart, both artistically and personally. I'm from Missouri originally, and have family both in St Louis and in Missouri. It means a lot to me that this specific work is headed there.

Recently I was in Portland for the monthly gallery walk, and was struck by a show at Blue Sky Gallery by Michael Light. His work captures our industrial patterns from above in photographs, from the beginnings of residential layouts of track homes in Arizona, to the image you see above of a freeway over/underpass complex, in a very haunting and beautiful way. I saw this show now a couple of weeks ago with artist Brian Cypher, and we both came away from it moved. I have for sometime been taking photos from up high, using a tilt shift program in my camera to shrink the landscape I see around me. Michael Light does this as well, simply and with no effects, again reminding us that sometimes finding, seeing and capturing are all one needs to garner a powerful image.

I had a wonderful visit today at the studio from Claudia Hollander-Lucas and her wonderful junior class of painters at Cornish College of the Arts today. I picked up some Top Pot donuts and showed the studio, it's ingredients, and answered best I could the wonderful questions they had for me. A great question was raised in regard to artist's statements, and how I deal with them? I said I treat artist statements with a skip in a flowing thought. I often find that a poem or a line from a favorite philosopher usually fits better to what I'm doing than anything I could say about the moves being made in the studio.

Someone asked how I deal with hitting a wall or a stop in the work, and how I work through that? I have learned several tricks to that over the course of the last twenty-five years, one is to allow it to hit you, accepting that allows you to move on often. I find that photography is helping me lots, gathering imagery outside of my own hands frees me quite often.

I really enjoyed the time, which flew by, with the students. Last week I went back to my old high school and talked with the graphics class there about the workings of an artist post high school, college and now twenty some years into one's practice. It was and has been very uplifting to be around that energy...

Slowly starting to work again, so thought it would be a good time to share and say thanks for all the well wishes and concern with my recent surgery.

New ideas sparking as I rested much of the last four weeks, which will slowly appear, and grounding myself more as I edited away being on Facebook, and keeping my internet time very limited. Reading Nicholas Carr's latest book, The Shallows, which explores the internet's effect on our brains. I know for me, it has been a ten year ride that has eroded parts of me and allowed parts of me to emerge that I don't like and the lack of time on it has been calming and centering.

Combinations

I've been on a roll of late with making combines, simple arrangements from similar or various types of canvas's and wood panel works. It's very liberating to get outside the simple rectangle and square shapes, and to go as far as you can with combinations or as simple with them as possible. I did a grey and white combination recently and have a bunch of these yellow and grey ones going now, and like automatic drawing, they kick up an energy that is all their own.

This coming Thursday I'll be part of a show curated by artist Juan Alonso, for COCA [Center On Contemporary Art] upcoming Annual - Memory Upgrade.

Memory Upgrade
From December 2, 2010 - January 1, 2011, CoCA Pioneer Square will present Memory Upgrade, a juried exhibition featuring work from 16 emerging as well as established artists in a wide variety of visual media, including 2d, 3d, and video.

This show explores the ways in which artists have responded to the global financial crisis by changing various aspects of their work. Considered collectively, these artists hint at the heightened importance of memory, history, and the role of the artist to affect social change.

Four new works were sent to Circa Gallery in Minneapolis and here is one of them, a piece titled Bric Jaz. I've been revisiting some of my older styles of work, which are mostly black and white, as you probably have seen from the new Target motif works of late. I find it so energizing to see how another artist, and especially one you really identify with, works. I had some new paintings that I showed at Woodside Braseth Gallery on Thursday night and my friend and fellow artist, Alfred Harris, came by and took a look, and then after the festivities, invited a few of us over to hang out. His way of working is something I completely understand, lots of little things contributing then later to bigger things. Materials like paper, all types, wood surfaces, again, all types, and finishes that shine. It recharged me to see it all. Thank you Alfred for the post opening enjoyment!
